Establishing Math Communities & Fostering Discourse

The first unit in each grade level is structured to establish strong mathematical communities. Students are provided with the opportunity to bring their own experiences to the lesson activities and see themselves in the material and mathematics through contexts and adaptations.

The curriculum presents problem-based activities designed to promote discussion and for students to defend reasoning. Each day, the lessons provide opportunities for each student to contribute to the math community by sharing ideas.

Creating A Positive Math Identity

Students of all levels access deeper mathematical reasoning through rigorous lessons which promote a positive math identity. Each lesson contains built-in supports and strategies for English Language Learners, as well as lesson-level strategies for students with disabilities.

Rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all, the curriculum balances problem-solving with the development of conceptual understanding. The curriculum content uses coherent mathematical stories across units and grade levels. Each unit is designed with research-based learning trajectories.

K–12 Continuity

What’s more, Open Up Resources K–5 transitions seamlessly to Open Up Resources 6–8 Math, which contains all of the same teacher supports, family resources, and lesson-specific supports for students while fostering open discussion in the classroom. Open Up Resources 6–8 Math is also available digitally through Kiddom.
