Lindsay Kerven, a 4th and 5th-grade teacher at Bea Underwood Elementary School of Garfield County School District 16 (CO), has been named the Open Up Resources EL Education K–5 Language Arts Teacher of the Month for March.

Kerven’s work with EL Education K–5 Language Arts makes her one of the most innovative teachers in the country. The EL Education K–5 Language Arts curriculum inspires a new way of teaching language arts by engaging students through compelling, real-world content to build equitable and inclusive learning opportunities.

During the extended school closure period the nation is now facing, Kerven has freely given of her time in creating resources to support her learners while openly sharing them for other teachers use. Some of the resources she created included video versions of 1st grade skills block lessons and 5th grade NearPod module lessons to keep the learning going while students are away from school.

Teachers in the Open Up Resources EL Education K–5 Language Arts Community have given Kerven “Hero Status” and called her work “remarkable” and “brilliant.” You can access Kerven’s resources along with other teacher-submitted resources in this Covid-19 Resource Page.

Kerven shared that she loves using the curriculum with her learners because of all the potential it has to make learning more personalized for students. We are certainly appreciative of all the work she has done to create personalized resources to support teachers and students around the country during this difficult time.
