Included with your HIVE 2020 registration is a chance to choose your own adventure with 1-hour flex sessions over two additional days—Thursday, July 9 and Thursday, July 16. With 20+ open sessions designed for leaders and teachers, all attendees have an opportunity to customize their experience.

Authoring Team of Open Up Resources High School Math
Make sure that students connect mathematical discussions and their experiences engaged in rich tasks to enduring mathematical understandings. This is often referred to as “anchoring.” The authors of OUR High School Mathematics will share how the materials are incorporating “Takeaways” for every task. Routines that support students as they summarize, synthesize and reflect on their learning will be shared. This process promotes the development and meaningful connection of both conceptual understanding and procedural skill.

In order to realize the promise of digital high-quality curriculum, teachers and administrators must develop change management strategies to support their learning community’s transition towards innovative learning models. Utilizing small groups, we will engage in a rich discussion about what is necessary to manage the transition towards blended, personalized learning models. We’ll begin with a framework for planning, and dig deep into implementation and reflection. We will discuss how to build systems, structures, supports, and processes. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a clear change management goal and a framework to support their blended and/or distance learning program for summer and fall 2020.

It is your turn to put on the student hat with this fun, engaging and informative session! If you have struggled with implementing and differentiating Skills Block, this session will help set you up for success Led by an experienced teacher from an Atlanta Public Schools Turnaround Title I school, who have successfully improved student academic growth using the EL Education Reading Foundations Skills Block. In this session, you will experience hands-on learning that will grow your confidence in using cycle lesson and implementing differentiated small group instruction using microphases to meet students’ needs.

Let’s talk assessments, from pre-unit diagnostic assessments to formative Cool Downs to end-of-unit assessments. Pose questions and brainstorm with a group of teachers experienced with the curriculum, just like you! Collaboration is key, and we are all better together.

Teaching Lab
Participants will experience the ways in which EL Education's K-5 ELA curriculum supports accessibility for all students. Participants will also understand what high-quality professional learning looks like in service of high-quality curriculum implementation.
Better Lesson
Ideally, students would engage in the OUR 6-8 Math Curriculum by working face-to-face with a small group of peers to grapple with tasks, and then learn from each other’s thinking in a whole class discussion facilitated by the teacher. Given the current necessity of distance or blended learning, in this session we will explore how creative teachers have been using distance learning tools to help students engage with the content and spirit of the curriculum from their own homes.
Pivot/Core
Discuss and experience one or more unit summary lessons (“Let’s Put it to Work” lessons) from the Grade 6 Open Up Resources 6-8 Math curriculum. Discuss ideas for how to utilize these activities within a unit.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Kristopher J. Childs, will lead the conversation on HIVE 2020’s theme: Reimagining Education. Dr. Childs has created a movement to inspire all who are involved in academic endeavors globally to pursue excellence and academic success. Additional speakers include: Natalie Wexler, Rashad Slade, Principal Baruti Kafele, Dr. Amanda Jansen, Sara Van Der Werf, and D. Lacy Asbill.
HIVE 2020, originally planned to take place in New Orleans, went virtual March 31 in response to school closures and community stay-in-place orders. The professional learning conference will now take place over five days starting June 23. Programming will be synchronous and interactive with recordings of all sessions provided to participants after the conference for future viewing.
